How to Clean a Shower Pump Filter (Step-by-Step)

If you have an electric or mechanical shower pump — common in homes with low mains water pressure — the pump's inlet filter needs periodic cleaning to keep water flow strong and prevent the pump from working harder than it needs to. This is a different component from a shower head filter cartridge, and it's often overlooked because it's usually tucked out of sight near the pump unit itself.
Why This Filter Gets Overlooked
A shower pump's inlet filter (sometimes called a strainer) exists to stop debris and sediment from entering the pump mechanism. Because it's typically located at the pump housing rather than at the shower head, it doesn't get the same routine attention as a visible shower filter — but a clogged pump filter can noticeably reduce water pressure and strain the pump motor over time.
Before You Start: Turn Off Power and Water
Always switch off the shower pump at the isolation switch and turn off the water supply to the pump before opening any housing. Most pumps have a dedicated shut-off valve; consult your pump's manual if you're unsure of its location, since designs vary by manufacturer.
Step 1: Locate the Filter Housing
The inlet filter is usually housed in a small transparent or opaque cap near where the water supply line connects to the pump. It's often a twist-off cap, sometimes with a small lever or clip securing it in place.
Step 2: Remove and Empty the Housing
Have a towel or shallow tray ready, since some residual water will drain out. Twist or unclip the housing cap and carefully remove the filter mesh or cartridge inside.
Step 3: Rinse the Filter Mesh
Most pump filters use a fine mesh screen rather than a replaceable cartridge. Rinse it thoroughly under running water, using a soft brush if needed to dislodge trapped sediment or mineral buildup. Avoid using excessive force, which can distort or tear the mesh.
Step 4: Check the Housing and O-Ring
While the filter is out, inspect the housing itself and the rubber O-ring seal for any debris, cracking, or wear. A damaged O-ring is a common cause of leaks after reassembly, so replace it if it looks worn.
Step 5: Reassemble and Test
Reinsert the clean filter mesh, replace the housing cap, and hand-tighten (avoid over-tightening, which can crack housing components). Turn the water supply back on first, check for leaks around the housing, then restore power to the pump and run a test cycle.
How Often Should You Clean It?
For most households, cleaning the pump inlet filter every 2–3 months is sufficient. Homes with harder water or older plumbing with more sediment may need more frequent cleaning — a noticeable drop in shower pressure is often the first sign it's time.
When to Call a Professional
If you notice unusual noise from the pump, persistent leaks after reassembly, or a significant pressure drop that cleaning doesn't resolve, it's worth having a plumber inspect the unit rather than continuing to troubleshoot independently — pump internals are a different matter from a simple filter cleaning.
